On October 3, the Neligh-Oakdale senior class attended County Government Day at the Antelope County Courthouse along with students from Elgin, Pope John, Clearwater, and Orchard. Prior to attending, students were elected to various county offices. The day began in the courtroom where students were given an oath of office and then preceded to follow their county official who provided information about what their jobs entailed as well as tours of their offices and the courthouse.
The biggest highlight of the day was the mock trial where several students participated in various roles. Mackenzie Rudolf acted as a prosecuting attorney, while Gage Dawson, Hailey Bixler, Emma Bixler, and Lesly Luna-Duran were key witnesses in the case against “Billy the Kid.” The mock trial resulted in an acquittal for the defendant after a unanimous decision from the jury.
After lunch, students reviewed information from the county officials. The day concluded with a game of jeopardy, in order to review information from the day, while allowing the schools in attendance to compete against one another.
A big thank you to all the elected and appointed officials who gave their time to help educate students about the important role that county government plays in everyone’s life, as well as, the Legion Auxiliary who provided lunch.
